OSRS bond vs buying gold: the honest cost comparison
Bonds are the in-the-rules way to turn cash into GP — but you pay a big premium for it. Here’s the real math versus buying gold.
A bond is the only way Jagex actually blesses turning real money into in-game wealth: you buy a bond for cash, sell it on the Grand Exchange, and pocket the GP. It’s zero ban risk. It’s also the most expensive gold you can buy. Here’s the honest tradeoff so you can decide which side you land on.
How the bond route works
You buy a bond directly from Jagex for roughly $7–$8, then sell it on the GE for whatever bonds are trading at that day. Bond prices float with demand — historically somewhere in the tens of millions of GP per bond. The appeal is obvious: it’s inside the rules, so there’s no recovery risk, no ban risk, and nothing to hide.
The catch: price per mil
Do the division and the premium is steep. If a bond costs about $7.50 and sells for, say, 25–35M, you’re paying somewhere around $0.21–$0.30 per million — and every bit of that runs through the GE, capped and taxed. Compare that to buying gold directly: SherpaGrinders sits at $0.235/M with real bulk discounts (−5% at 100M, −10% at 500M), so on larger orders the per-mil cost drops below the bond route rather than climbing. Bonds don’t scale — a 500M pile is 15+ bonds at full retail with no volume break.
Bond prices also drift, so on a bad day the bond route gets meaningfully worse while a shop price stays put. Check current pricing on our calculator at /buy-gold before you assume either way.
What you’re really paying for
The bond premium buys you one thing: complete safety. No rule broken, nothing to recover, nothing to flag. Buying gold directly is cheaper per mil at volume and faster, but it’s real-world trading — against Jagex’s rules, and nobody can promise you’ll never catch a ban. We’re not going to pretend otherwise; the honest version of that risk lives on our /safety page.
Which should you pick?
Want a small top-up and zero risk tolerance? Bonds are the clean, boring, correct answer, and we’ll happily point you there. Buying in volume, or want it cheaper and faster and you accept the risk? That’s what a shop is for. Either way, avoid anyone quoting wildly below market — that’s botted or a scam, and it’s covered in our /blog/osrs-gold-price-guide-2026 breakdown.
